As I write this blog, it is April 12, 2023. We are 102 days into the new year. I live in the Southern California area of the United States. As I write this blog, there have been 147 mass shootings in the United States. You read this correctly. There has been more than one mass shooting per day, one mass shooting every two-thirds of every day. That’s not an opinion. That’s a fact. People are being shot and killed at concerts, at stores, at work, at family gatherings, and at schools. Probably of greatest concern is that our young children actually have to know what an active shooter drill is. We keep killing our most precious resource.
The blame game rages on. It’s … take your pick … mental health, gun laws, the left, the right, law enforcement, parents, etc. There are arguments about 2nd amendment rights. There are arguments about religions. There are arguments about gender identity. There are arguments about too much government. There are arguments about not enough government. It’s none of those, and it’s all of those. But mostly it’s about inaction. Too many are quick to say what they BELIEVE won’t work, even though it’s never been tried. Opinions are like a- -holes, everybody has one.
Until we have a serious discussion that results in action that results in a change, it’s just all useless chatter. All of us are at risk, the young, the middle-aged, and the old, the white, the black, the Hispanic, the Asian, the Indigenous, the gay and lesbian, the straight, the transgender, EVERYONE!!
We are so busy pointing fingers and sending thoughts and prayers, that we do nothing that changes the situation. Guns are now the number one cause of death of young people ahead of accidents, cancer, and all other causes. Yet, we just gather and mourn. America has more mass shootings than any other country in world, and, NO, it’s not a price we need to pay for freedom.
Hey, Yellen. What’s your solution? I’m not suggesting any one solution. I am suggesting that the solution lies in sitting down together, listening, and coming up with something. In essence, LISTEN! It won’t get it all fixed the first or second time, but …
No one is sure who said this, but “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Collectively, we’ve done nothing.
DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING! Otherwise, people will continue getting killed at the hands of others at an ever-increasing and alarming rate.
Until next time, this is Dr. Andrew telling you to “Be kind to yourself.”
